What education is required to teach photography at a high school level?
Comments(2) | Under: Education Topic
I’ve recently been considering applying to grad school (at UW in the photography program) which got me wondering if my B.F.A is enough to teach at a high school level. Would a M.F.A in photo allow me to teach at a college level or are they a fair number of education classes required as well?

teaching at the high school level isn’t difficult you just need to get your license from the state.

For high school, the BFA is just the first step. You’ll also need to get a teaching credential. Several of the photography teachers I know also teach art. In any case, you will have to do some education courses and student teaching. The way around it is to give an afterschool program since so many schools have cut art out of the curriculum due to budget woes. You might be able to teach at a community college with an MFA, but there’s a credential for that, too. One thing that’s important to do is make sure you have a portfolio if you go for an interview, especially anything that might have been published.
