As a teacher in Mississippi, I can say this for a fact. Just as in poor metropolitan areas. The welfare system encourages ignorance. The reasoning is flawed by my standards but can be summed up by this: Why learn in school to get a good job and more money, my parents and everyone in my family eats well? (you should see the amount people can buy/or trade form money, since it is tax free) On top of this, you get more money for more children and you get more money if your child has disability ruling so it pays for you to make your kid act out in school until they get you the 'crazy' check. This whole things just multiplies until you have a large chunk of your school society that point blank will not learn because it is detrimental to their position in the welfare merry-go-round.

They don't pay enough to attract GOOD teachers, therefore they will always be 50th! This is the reason why I moved out of the state with my hubby and son when he was 4!

Obviously, if we're 50th in the US it's not too good. It can be improved but not by throwing more money at a broken system like many will suggest.
For the record, we're also one of the poorest and most overweight. How ironic is that?
What geography knowledge has to do with it I don't know but from what I've seen there are people all across the United States that know next to nothing about the subject.

We don't know geography? That's strange. I know mine pretty well. In fact, geography is a required course at my school. I'm not sure if it's state curriculum or not, though.

Anyway, I think that it's true, but it's also sad. We're a poor state, and we don't get enough taxes to pay teachers well. Many good teachers know that they can do much better in another state and pack it up and leave, and all that are left are the ones that got their teaching degree from the discount community college across from their house.

I have a bunch of great teachers, but that's because I go to the top high school in the state :D

It can be improved once we start getting people out of welfare and into jobs. Then they'll pay taxes, then we'll have revenue to spend on education, then we'll maybe not be 50th in line. By the way, not everyone in Mississippi is a complete idiot. The Gulf Coast is a very smart region, as are the areas around bigger cities like Hattiesburg, Jackson, and Natchez.
