you could go to a college and/or trade school and take courses in photography, you gain experience through amateur photography.

I know a guy in the bay area that teaches photography in a school on Chestnut st. San Francisco. He did some work that was in the De Young museum in Golden Gate Park, so I think he is pretty good at photography. If I were you, I would go and talk to him, and see what he has to say about photography as a career.

A lot depends on the type of photography you want to do. Commercial,Portrait/wedding,landscape etc. If you are very serious about this and can afford it check into Brooks Institute in California.
Community college has courses as well as some university's. You can also ask an established photographer if he would be willing to take you on as an intern in which you would work for free for the experience.
Also take some business courses. There is more to photography than just taking photos.

2 years HNC college or a btec will get you some types of work some will want a degree. you also need to show at interview a top portfolio so shoot as much as you can, get to know your camera. This is somthing you can do out of college. most peopel think that a bit of paper from a college will atomaticly get them a job. i would say 1 in 50 students end up with a job in photography so you have to be the best every day. but it is a great job
good luck

background for photographers is from every where.
degree, the best ones I know have degrees in education, science and business. Those are the ones who make a living at it. Those of us who are educated only as photographers have a harder time at the business end of it.

Experiences would be doing it. A part time job at a studio as you get your college education would be a very good way to get it. You can move from studio to studio getting other views of how to do things so you can decide what area of photography you want to do later.

If your only wanting to do weddings and such then just working for a studio or two while in college will get you well underway.
Find and join your local Pro Photographers guild or the PPof A will give you an inside track to meeting the "pros" in your area as well
